Abstract
The title of my Research, Thesis for my M.Phil. Urdu is “Literature and Social Psychology: Nostalgia in the Poetry of Pakistani Diaspora” Literature is the mirror of society that is why it accepts the effects of attitudes, inclinations, movements and actions created in a society and expresses these in a particular way. In the 20th century, well identified changes are being found in the sub continent and the parti on of sub continent is prominent among them. It was such a troubling situation which directed every man towards individualism. Topical changes are being found in Urdu literature after Pakistan came in to being. Nostalgia was found which was not a new inclination in Urdu literature. This tradition has been coming from the Wali Dakni to Nasir Qazmi and it is still found in the poetry of the poets exiled from the country. Nostalgia is literally related to psychology. This is an inclination which takes birth from the hard feelings of the past. First of all, used this form calling it Des Badhka. It has been considered an illness during world War 1 and 2. Any war which used to dishearten soldiers, it created a wish to return to his own country. But in literature, nostalgia is an action to discover the past which has positive effects on society. Clay Rotalage has discussed it very comprehensively. He has discussed how nostalgia makes the social activities effective creating the spirit of intimacy and increases trust in social capabilities. It helps to search new relationships and encouragement. It helps to control the problems in the existing relationships. It energies the spirit of sympathy which can create the sympathatic society. The term immigrants is used for those who migrate to other countries and settle down there. After Pakistan came into being, a big number of immigrants migrated to developed countries like British to which migration is still continued. This migration has been done due to educational, political, social, cultural and financial issues. After migrating to British, these immigrants are facing numerous problems which include mixing in new culture, inadequacy with language, freedom of religious rites, and social and moral values. Because of these reasons, the immigrants feel alienation from the environment and become victim of intense isolation and so they feel nostalgia. This can be seen in the Pakistani immigrant poets. Ahmed Mushtaq, Saaqi Farooq, Mansoor Afaq and Ali Arman are the poets whose poetry shows the elements of recollection and remembrance of the country.
