Abstract
Taṣūwuff, or Mysticism, is an essential field of the Islamic civilization. Islamic Taṣūwuff is to purify one's self from the vices and vices of morality and adorn oneself with morality's virtues. In other words, Islamic mysticism has effectively solved human psychological and moral problems with the cooperation of religion and spirituality. However, over time, when different civilizations came together after the spread of Islam, the real Islamic Taṣūwuff began to transform. The traditions of other faiths and their thoughts also influenced the Islamic Taṣūwuff. The different religious traditions caused non-Islamic elements to be included in Islamic Sufism. Therefore, orientalists have objections that Islamic Sufism is not based on purely Islamic teachings rather, it is based on religious traditions of Judaism, Christianity, Hinduism, and Buddhism. In this research, the various thoughts and objections of orientalists have been analysed on Islamic Sufism. This thesis attempted to answer some questions about how various non-Islamic influences have affected Islamic Sufism. This study is divided into four chapters, Chapter 1 is about Sufism's reality, status, and evolutionary period. Chapter 2, discuss Islamic mysticism, connection of orientalists with Sufism and reasons for their objections. Chapter 3 discusses Nicholson, Ignaz Goldziher, and A. J. Arberry's accounts, relics, and orientalist thoughts, and the last chapter discuss an analysis of orientalist studies on Islamic Taṣūwuff. This study adopts a qualitative research paradigm with analytical research methodology to reach conclusion. The original text of oriental studies has been accessed and analyzed in the Islamic Context. This study assumes that a good number of studies of the orientalists focus on Sufism in general and especially on Islamic Mysticism. One more thing highlighted in the study that mostly orientalist studies observe Islamic Mysticism from sources or apologetic literature. Therefore, there is a need to understand the orientalists' voices carefully and make a comprehensive strategy to encounter them on the bases of Islamic Fundamental sources.
