Abstract
Contemporary Forms of contempt of Islam: Causes and Effects (A study in context of national and international legal framework) The phenomenon of contempt of Islam is not a novel trend. Islam, its figures and teachings have been ridiculed since early ages of its advent. The trend has only changed its shapes with passage of time and space. In the modern age, various forms and philosophies of the contempt of Islam have sprung with attractive and seductive names. On the one hand, there are atheistic ideologies which not only negate the existence and role of any Divine power but also mock the Islamic concept of Divinity. On the other hand, Deistic movements are also there which come up with the idea of rejection of revelation and the life after death. Yet another prevalent phenomenon is of projecting secularism while simultaneously mocking respectful religious figures in the name of “Freedom of Expression”. The champions of Feminism are also aimed at ridiculing Islamic teachings with flowery name of women rights. Modernism and Postmodernism are the intellectual and philosophical ornamentations to make fun of everything attached to Islam. With those who are skeptic and critic of the Glorious Qur’an, there is a considerable number of orientalists who come up with ever new objections regarding Islam every second day. Yet there are also those who have disrespectful behavior towards the companions of the Holy Prophet (pbuh). In addition to their individual appeal, all these philosophies, movements and figures preach their stance using print electronic and particularly, social media. Their impact is not restricted to the non-Muslims only. Rather Muslim societies also face this phenomenon. Print media tools including newspapers, magazines, journals and books are effective in this regard. In the area of electronic media, movies, computer and mobile games are systematically used to mock Islam. Blogs, twitter and Facebook posts, YouTube videos and WhatsApp, as the key social media platforms, are part of this virtual war. In this context, it is of vital significance to defend Islam, its teachings and its figures at ideological as well as intellectual fronts. This study, after giving an account of the historical context of contempt of Islam, goes on to analyze the factors and causes which work as a catalyst to give birth to the act of mockery. It further investigates the ideologies and philosophies which are at forefront to make fun of Islam. The study not only explains the present forms of the contempt of Islam, but also gives a detailed account regarding the elements and figures which are presently under attack due to their connection with Islam. Furthermore, it identifies those elements which are responsible to facilitate the contempt of Islam. The research attempts to answer the questions regarding the existence of national and international legal framework which could possibly contain such hateful agenda and barriers in the implementation of this legal framework. While suggesting the potential role of executive, parliament, judiciary and academia to eradicate the contempt of Islam, the study concludes with recommendations and suggestions which have the ability to play an effective role in this regard.
