Abstract Status of Modesty according to Islamic values And its protection mechanism Allah has created humans as the ‘best of beings’ and thereby blessed them with lots of inherent virtues. Modesty is one such virtue and perhaps the most fundamental one. From an Islamic jurisprudence perspective modesty is defined as the natural disposition of humans to dislike bad deeds. Islam has highlighted the importance of modesty so that Muslims become a source of peace and tranquillity for the society. Modesty is so fundamental to Islam that it is imperative on every Muslim to practice it whatever the circumstances might be. This article investigates the role of modesty among other Islamic values and also discusses mechanisms to protect it amongst society. Misuse of internet and other electronic media, fashion industry, free mixing between men and women, all are influencing modesty in a very negative way and thereby contributing to a culture of shamelessness. In today’s world the misuse of electronic media and western media are negatively influencing Muslims and are trying hard to force modesty out Muslims and their society, at any cost. So much so, that even a well-respected and religious Muslim families are using media and internet improperly in their households. People can easily access shameless material and because of this the importance of Islamic values and modesty are losing their importance. If you look at our situation from a research point of you can see that most of our problems from a moral point of view are due to the lack of modesty in our society. Thus it should be our number one concern to give importance and attention to modesty. We can stop the drainage of modesty from Muslims and play a role in protecting this from happening only through the guidance of Quran and Sunnah. This research work is an effort in this direction.
