Abstract
Thesis Title: Post 9/11 Regional Dynamics in South Asia: Implications for Pakistan South Asia is geographically very important region for major powers. There are two powerful states in the region, India and Pakistan. Both have different ideology, culture and religions. This study highlights that important regional changes in South Asia are taking place and directly effecting on Pakistan’s internal and external situation. India and Pakistan have been in conflicting situation since independence. Both states have fought three wars and the issue of Kashmir is a bone of contention. There has been crucial role of US in the region and changed several times in history. But the ultimate goal of US as a dominant power in the region has never changed. Due to 9/11, Pakistan adopted the policy of US i.e. global war on terror (GWOT).Indeed, Pakistan was used by US as a frontline state. The new partnership between China, Russia and Pakistan has changed the situation of the region. CPEC is one of the major projects between China and Pakistan, it will provide a great opportunity for Pakistan and will connect stakeholders to the markets of different regions such as Central Asia, Middle East and Europe. Therefore, Russia and other neighboring states of China are also showing interests in CPEC. The triangular relationship between China, Russia and Pakistan will not only help against terrorism but it is defying influence of US in the South Asia. Pakistan joined India, China and Russia in military exercises as Pakistan and India are full members of the SCO. Interestingly, to regain its position in the region, Washington is increasing ties with New Delhi. The growing Indo-US alliance exhibits that containment of China is their common goal. In this context, this study identifies the major challenges to Pakistan and also suggest way out to deal with emerging challenges
