Abstract The title of my research thesis for M.Phil. Urdu is “A Study of the characters of Ashafaq Ahmad’s Short Stories”. Only two books of short stories (Aik Muhabat so Afsany & Ujaly Phool) have been taken in this discussion. These books have been published in ١٩٥١ and ١٩٥٧. The purpose of this research is to study of Ashfaq Ahmad s’ thoughts and thinking about human life which was presented through characters of his short stories. The characters of Ashfaq Ahmad in the short stories have unique identity. The central characters and supporting Characters (Male and Female) of these short stories not only have helped us to understand these short stories but also provided their basic identities. This research has been divided into five chapters. The first Chapter includes title “Introduction of the topic and basic discussion”. In the start of this chapter the introduction of topic has been described. After this problem statement and limitations of research has been mentioned. After that the objectives of research has been expressed. In this chapter a short discussion has been conducted about what is a Character and has also been discussed major types of characters in short stories. In the last portion of first chapter, it has also been described the personality of Ashfaq Ahmad and his contribution in Urdu literature. The second chapter is “A Study of Male Characters in Short Stories” .This chapter has been divided into two sections and more two sub sections for discussion about central charters and supporting characters. This chapter also includes the study of central characters and supporting Characters (Male) of the both short story books. Third chapter’s title is “A Study of Female Characters in Short Stories” .This chapter has also been divided into two sections and more two sub sections for discussion about central characters and supporting characters. This chapter also includes the study of central characters and supporting characters (Female) of the both short story books.Forth Chapter is a “Major Identities of characters in Short Stories” .In this chapter discussion launched under three main points Romantic characters, Religious elements in characters and Educational & Literary characters. In this chapter a study and thoroughly discussion have been made about major identities of characters and influence of characters has also been debated. In the Fifth Chapter an overall analysis has been made. This chapter is based on a comprehensive study, conclusions and reconditions deduced as a result of the overview of the discussion in the first fourth chapters, reaching a summarize and compiling a few suggestions at the end.
