Abstract
With the start of 21st century, significant political and social changes appeared around the globe. Pakistani society was also influenced by these changes resulting new thematic trends in literature. Urdu short story written in Pakistan reflects 9/11 issue, globalization and feminism as major themes in recent era. This research focuses on analysis of Urdu short stories in the above context selecting a sample of short stories published in Quarterly “Adabiat” Islamabad from 2011 to 2018 period. Thesis comprises of five chapters: In the first chapter explanation of key terms, research methodology and introductory information is given about the topic. Second chapter titled “Contemporary Urdu Short Story and 9/11” discusses short stories in the backdrop of 9/11 issue. How 9/11 hit common man’s psyche and what was its traumatic effect on the people of this region, how war on terror effected daily life of the people and created an atmosphere of fear, how Urdu short story reflected the situation through its theme and characters, all this is analyzed in this chapter. Third chapter titled “Contemporary Urdu Short Story and Globalization” presents analysis of short stories in the context of changing situation of society due to global cultural pressures. Fourth chapter titled “Contemporary Urdu Short Story and Feminism” discusses themes related to feminist approach in Urdu short stories of selected period. In the recent years feminism emerged as one of the popular themes in literature and much have been written for and against it. This chapter discusses how different aspects of feminism have been reflected in contemporary Urdu short story. Fifth chapter consists of findings and recommendations.
