Abstract
Bashir Surfi is known as a poet, writer and journalist .His profession was journalism and he worked as the editor of different newspapers including the Daily Jang, Daily Hurmat, Daily Haider, a weekly magazine Akhbar-e-Watan. Besides he was the editor of a maganize Iftikhar-e-Asia and also published on English newspaper “The View week”. Bashir Surfi inherited his interest in poetry. His father and grandfather were leadings poets of Arabic and Persian. He belonged to the decade of seven nineteen seventies. He was associated with Halqa-e-Arbab-e-Zouk and also a group of writers in Rawalpindi. Ghulam Rasool Tariq was one of his most significant mentors. His contemporaries included Dr. Rashid Amjad, Waqar Azeem, Safdar Hahsimi, Sarwar Kamran, Ijaz Rahi, Shaban M Anawri and Mansha Yaad. Bashir Surfi poetry reflects his awareness of his age as well as the dynamic elements of tradition Migration from Kashmir added romance and revolutionary thoughts to his poetry .In addition to these he remained all his life under the strong influence of his religious background. Bashir Surfi poetic works include hymns in praise of Allah (Hamad) Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم (Naat), odes and poems about Kashmir. Each of the genres he worked upon are different in nature. He, however, different exploited each genre to project his ideas .On the whole his poetry reflects hi telescopic vision. But he never ignores the external environment of his contemporary age. The element of is quite prominent in his poems. Especially the poems in the background of Kashmir reflect his revolutionary spirit .Besides his poetry reflects his attitude towards others problems and issues of life. His religious imagination is quite visible in the hymns written in praise of Allah and the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم .His odes reflect his romantic tendency. Thus his poetry has diverse dimensions. The scope of this dissertation includes the regions includes the regions romantic and revolutionary aspects which contribute to his poetry. These elements are analyzed in order to interpret his poetry. This dissertation is divided into four chapters as given below: The first chapter discusses the personality and literary standing of Bashir Surfi .Besides it includes an analysis of Bashir Surfi religious poetry with particular emphasis on his hymns. In addition to these this chapter also analysis the moral aspects of his poetry such as his sense of sensitivity for humanity, his love and brotherhood and his view of social values. The third chapter is an analysis of romantic elements in Bashir Surfi poetry. It discusses his personal as well as social romance reflected in his hopes, dreams, nostalgia, and desire to get rid of troubles of life. The fourth chapter is a study of revolutionary aspect in Bashir Surfi’s poetry. The elements of resistance in this poetry are especially analyzed in the perspective of historical events of the fall of Dhaka, Martial Law and the freedom Movement of Kashmir. The fifth chapter includes a general analysis along with the findings and recommendations of the researcher.
