Abstract
Sufism has played a vital role in shaping the moral, spiritual, and cultural dimensions of Muslim societies, particularly in South Asia. In Punjab, the Khanqahi system served as a powerful medium for transmitting spiritual values and fostering social harmony. The present research aims to explore and critically analyze the impact of Sufism on the cultural and civilizational patterns of Punjab through the study of selected Khanqahs, namely those of Data Ganj Bakhsh (Lahore), Bahauddin Zakariya (Multan), and Baba Farid Ganj Shakar (Pakpattan). This study follows a qualitative research design based on historical, analytical, and interpretive methods. Primary and secondary sources, including classical texts, contemporary research, and field-based observations, were used to collect data. Findings reveal that Sufism significantly influenced Punjab’s cultural identity by promoting moral purification, tolerance, and unity among diverse social groups. It contributed to literature, music, language, and art, thereby enriching the region’s civilizational legacy. However, the study also identifies certain deviations such as ritualism and hereditary practices that diluted the original spirit of Sufism. The research is guided by a socio-religious analytical framework, enabling a balanced understanding of both spiritual and cultural dynamics. The study concludes that the Khanqahi institutions of Punjab not only preserved Islamic spirituality but also shaped a pluralistic and inclusive cultural ethos that continues to define the region’s identity today. These insights hold relevance for contemporary discussions on interfaith harmony and ethical social development. Keywords: Sufism, Khanqahs, Punjab, Culture, Spirituality, Civilizational Impact
