Abstract Abstract Topic of PhD Dissertation (Rhetorical Studies on the Aphorisms of Ibn Ata' Allah ) We are living in a secular globalization era, the matter killed out the spiritual, many people lost their soul for the sake of getting worldly benefits. There is a strong and significant need for the spirituality in the post modern era. We have witnessed the phenomenon of new religions in the world, the people are searching for truth and spiritual cure, but they went to a wrong direction, and they have not find the way to their spiritual home. The Islamic tradition has a vast spiritual legacy, we Muslim should discover, excavate, and collate it, then demonstrate it to the non-Islamic world. One of the most important spiritual works which was neglected in the non-Arab countries is “Aphorisms of Ibn Ata' Allah”--one famous Shaikhy in 7th century of Islamic calendar, in this thesis I attempted to discuss the rhetorical beauties of this classical Sufi work, I explained the secret of the rhetoric in it, and introduce its deep meaning to the readers. I divided this thesis into introduction, five chapters, and conclusion. In the introduction I talked the importance of the topic and the causes of selecting it, I also discussed the research questions and the objectives of the research, and research methodology, literature review, and the meaning of wisdom. In the first chapter, I studied the life of Ibn Ata' Allah, his time, family, education, books, other’s influence on him, and his influence on others in his age and the coming ages. In the second chapter, I researched on his book Hikmah al-Attayinyah，I explain the topics of Hikmah, its most important characteristics, its exegesis, and translations. In the third chapter, I focused on alm al-bayani in the Hikmah. I found out the simile(tashbih),metaphor(istiarah),metonymy(kenayah),and allegory(majaz). I will discuss the secret and the beauty of alm al-bayani in the Hikmah. In the fourth chapter, I focused on alm al-badia in the Hikmah, I found out rhyme(saja),autonomasia(tauriya),anthetisis(tibageh), comparasion(mugabalah), I will explain the secret behind it. In the fifth chapter, I discussed alm al-maani, I researched the brachylogy(ijaz), conterpoise(musawatah), and circumlocution (itunab) ;abridgment (al-gasur), assertive sentence and imperative sentence. Finally, I got the conclusion of the study and gave my recommendations and suggestions, and I listed technical indexes, and a comprehensive bibliography.
