Abstract
"In the Name Of Allah the Most Beneficent the Most Merciful" Topic of M. Phil Dissertation: The Social Trends in the Fictional Literature in the View of Mikhail Naimy, (An Analytical and Technical Study) In more than one respct, Mikhail Naimy is a unique Arab writer: through his education in Russian schools in Lebanon and Palestine and later in Tsarist Russia, he became so familiar with Russian language and literature that began to write poetry in Russian language. After the immigration of Mikhail in the United States, he graduated from the University of Washington with the degree of Arts and the degree of Law. Mikhail lived in the United States for over twenty years. There he became very familiar with Anglo-Saxon literature. His poems in English were published in several American periodicals and newspapers including The New York Times. Mikhail Naimy has an inherent religious feeling; he was born as an Orthodox Christian in 1889 in Lebanon. His wide interest in Buddhism, Hinduism, and the Muslim Sufis widened his perspectives on the matters concerning religion that he almost came to preach a "faith" of his own. Although his faith was broadly based on Christian teachings, he had embraced elements from almost every faith that humanity has known. It is no exaggeration to say that Naimy is one of the most influential thinkers in the Arab World, his ideas on adaptive attitude of East towards Western civilization are of great importance. Naimy propagates the idea that Western civilization is corrupting the human soul, that its materialistic attitude towards life is to be denounced and the East should avoid adopting such a civilization. This observation and faith from a thinker who is equally familiar with Western and Eastern cultures retained more importance. His ideas to influence a large number of younger people in the Arab World. In addition to his views regarding religion, Naimy is one of the pioneers to introduce new concepts regarding literature. His views on the meaning and aims of literature constituted a revolution in literary thinking in the Arab World, a fact which is recognized by scholars interested in the development of Modern Arabic literature. Naimy in the sharp social orientation of his stories, their realism and striking humanism, and their love and compassion of the human being. Naimy’s stories are pictures of everyday life, morals, relationships, occupations, and psychology of primarily simple people. They create vivid characters that belong to a certain setting and time. In portraying the life of the people, their troubles and needs, and the injustice of the social systems, he created a persuasive archetype of the Arab laborer. His most successful Arabic works in the various literary genres are as follows: Novel: Mudhakkirat al Arqash; Short story: Kan ma Kan, Akabir, Sanatuha al-jadidah; Abu Batta; Criticism and biography: Al-Ghirbal, Jibran Khalil Jibran; Poetry: Hams al-jufun; Drama: Al-aba wal-Banun; Autobiography: Sab unhikayatumr; English work: The Book of Mirdad.
