Abstract
ABSTRACT Equivalence, Domestication and Foreignization in the Novels of Alaa Al-Aswany, translated into the English Language (The Yacoubian Building, as a Specimen) Translation has become an extensive science with the passage of time, which is now not just limited to linguistic transformation between the two texts (source and the target) and proficiency in them, but this profession demands realization of the cultural, social and civilizational differences between the two languages as well. Since the boundaries of translation have extended to a number of other fields of knowledge and new independent field namely Translation Studies has emerged which is characterized by numerous branches having integrated specializations including comparative literature, linguistics and history, in addition to the social, cultural, psychological and educational sciences. This thesis aims at analyzing English translation of the novel The Yacoubian Building by Alaa Al Aswany, relying on the most important strategies and theories that have been put forth and developed by the pioneers of Translation Studies during the past few decades, especially Equivalence, Domestication and Foreignization, and its various sub-tools and techniques such as; substitution, deletion, addition, synonymity, borrowing, modification, adaptation and rephrasing. It is worth mentioning that Alaa Al Aswany is considered as one of those modern Arab writers whose novels and fiction works have been translated into a number of other languages especially English and earned popularity for them in the Non-Arab countries as well. Most prominent objectives and questions of the research are as follows: - Assessment of the extent to which the translator has succeeded in conveying the original message of the ST (source text) to the TT (target text). - Application of the theories and strategies of Equivalence, Domestication and Foreignization on English translation of the selected Arabic novel. - Figuring out the challenges, problems and hurdles which are faced by the professional translator (Humphrey Davies) while translating into English. - Highlighting the relationship of translation with various other branches of knowledge such as: linguistics, sociology, culture, psychology and others. - Carrying out a realistic and qualitative analysis to contribute into opening new horizons for the academic research.
