Abstract Title: ‘’Saleem Ahmed’s understanding of Ghalib’’ with reference to his book ‘’GHALIB KON’’. The topic of my M.Phil Thesis is ‘’Saleem Ahmed’s understanding of Ghalib’’ with reference to his book ‘’GHALIB KON’’. To talk about the topic, the Saleem Ahmed is renowned and distinguished critic and poet of Urdu literature. He had spent a much time with Muhammad Hassan Askari, who is considered among pioneer critics of Pakistan. Saleem Ahmed’s point of view about the most popular Urdu poet Mirza Asadullah Khan Ghalib’s poetry is that it is not as much as great as it can be. He considered Meer Taqqi Meer as the greatest poet of Urdu poetry. He discussed the personality of Ghalib and stated that there were some shortcomings in the making of his personality. The thesis has been divided into five chapters whose detail is as under. First chapter is about the introduction and basic discussion in which the introduction to the topic, the tradition of Ghalib-Critic in Urdu, Saleem Ahmed’s literary and personal credentials and the background of his Ghalib-Critic are briefly discussed. 2nd chapter portrays the ideological analysis and discussion on human personality. The seven units of the book ‘’GHALIB KON’’ which are about the concept and nature of human personality are critically discussed, in the light of different views on the said subject. The role and scope of psychology in poetry is also highlighted, in the views of different critics, including Dr. Saleem Akhter. 3rd chapter is about the ideology of Ghalib, which is discussed under the heading of six chapters of the said book. This chapter specifically highlighted the Ghalib’s concepts about his self, family background, distinguished poetry and the uniqueness of his literary work, in a very keen and critical way. There are many counter arguments which are raised by different critics, in that particular chapter, beside the writer’s point of view. 4th chapter covers the debate on Ghalib’s claim about his unique style of uttering. The relationship between personality and style is also brought to light, in view of some authentic critic, beside Saleem Ahmed. The attitude of ignoring the traditions in literature is also critically discussed. 5th chapter, which is the last one, is about the overall review on Saleem Ahmed’s understanding of Ghalib. At the end of the chapter, the results of research and further recommendations have been explained.
