Abstract
The historical novel began to appear in the earliest period of Urdu work of fiction. The mystic characters, both positive and negative were being presented in historical novel. Since mysticism is a natural process of human thinking it has become a universal truth and reality. It has saturated in all the religions of the world too. In fact mysticism is the spiritual angle of every society and culture. It provides insight to each and every religion. Various writers of Urdu language have made mystic aspects as their subject matter in novel. The list of these famous persons includes a valuable name of Mustansar Hussain Tarar. The title of my M.phil thesis is “The Critical and Exploratory study of the Mystical elements in the Mantiq-AtTair Jadeed”. In this novel, Mustansar Hussain Tarar has narrated the mystic elements in heavenly and non- heavenly religions in a unique and interesting manner. The novel, MantiqAt-Tair jadeed is a sequel of an epic written by Khwaja FaridUd-Din Attar. Basically Mustansar Hussain Tarar is impressed by Khawaja Farid-ud-Din Attar. He admits him as his spiritual teacher. Following his footsteps, he has described mystic traditions through birds. He has pinpointed Buddha’s mystic life. Similarly he highlights the mystic aspects of Hinduism and Sikhism with respect to Gorakhnath, Hari Bharthari, Jogi Pooran and Guru Nanak. It is observed that these religions also have self denial, stoicism, search for truth and different kinds of exercises such asceticism, meditation and Yoga etc. While the mystic elements found in heavenly religions such as in Jewish, Christianity and Islam has been highlighted through birds. In this novel too, the writer has made us travel from worldly love to divine love by disclosing the secrets of knowledge of God and difference between vice, virtue and ecstasy.
